Painting Tricks
  • Make sure your paint is mixed well. If you just came back from having it mixed, it should be perfect and ready to pour. If it's been sitting around for a bit, you'll have to stir. Stir gently from the bottom.

  • If you're unsure if the colors in each gallon of paint for one room are not identical, you may want to mix them together in a 5-gallon bucket, mix them well, then return them to their cans.

  • For stains (water, magic marker, etc.), you will want to seal them with a shellac before painting over them so they will not come through the new paint.

  • Clean mildew off of walls with bleach mixed with TSP (a contractor-grade wall cleaner.) If you paint over the mildew, it will come through the paint.

  • To paint doors, first remove all the hardware. Use a wedge to hold it open. Paint the edge first. If the door has panels, paint the panels first, then the horizontal sections, then the vertical sections. Always paint with the grain! If the door is a flat-surface door, begin at the top and work your way down painting a third of the door at a time. (Top third, middle third, and bottom third.)

  • To paint windows, remove any hardware. Lower the upper window and raise the bottom window. Paint the sash then the rails. Don't paint the sash tracks. Return both to a near closed position, but don't close them all the way until both are completely dry. Paint any remaining parts of the window. Tape off the glass or use a razor blade to remove any paint soon after it's dry.

  • Left over paint can be stored for years for future touch ups. Just cover the can opening with plastic wrap, then replace the lid tightly. Store the can upside down. (Be sure to label the can with the date, the room, and the color for future reference!)

  • Proper disposal of paint and paint cans varies by town. If you finish a can, allow any remaining paint to dry by leaving the top off. Check with your town regarding disposal of cans. For cans with paint still in them, you may need to wait for a hazardous waste day in your city. DO NOT dump paint down drains or in your yard. Dispose of cans and paint properly.
